Bass Rock
from North Berwick
The Bass rock is a steep sided volcanic plug in the Firth of Forth. It is about a mile offshore between North Berwick and Dunbar. The large areas of the rock appear white due to the droppings of the worlds largest colony of Northern Gannets. The lighthouse was built by Robert Stephenson, cousin to Robert Louis Stephenson, at the start of the 20th century. This is the view of the rock from the harbour at North Berwick about 3 miles distant.
